Ever imagined Idris Elba wearing a black tuxedo and saying the iconic phrase: “Shaken, not stirred?” Well, it could possibly become a reality as the Luther actor has admitted he would love to play the role of James Bond following endless speculation that he’ll be cast as the next 007.
With Daniel Craig expected to play the famous undercover agent for at least another two films, rumours are rife as to who exactly will fill Bond’s shiny black shoes for the next chapter and Idris, 44, has been a recurring name in the list of potential candidates. Fortunately, the British actor is more than up for the role, admitting during a Reddit AMA session on Saturday: “Yes, if it was offered to me, absolutely.”
We’re totally freaking out right now! Interestingly, Idris has spoken out about the Bond role in the past but actually denied that he had been approached to star in the franchise while also expressing his annoyance at being dubbed the “first black Bond.” “I’ve always detested the phrase ‘Black Bond’, I just don’t understand it. We don’t say “White Bond”, we just say “Bond” so it suddenly becomes a black man and he’s a “Black Bond” so I hate that phrase and it’s a rumour that’s gotten out of control basically but that’s all it is.
There’s no truth in it whatsoever,” Idris told ITV’s Lorraine in January.
While there’s now hope Idris will be cast as Bond, one show he won’t be spotted in is Marvel Studios’ upcoming Netflix series Luke Cage, revealing in the AMA chat: “I think there’s an actor already signed on for it, fortunately or unfortunately.”
Still, Idris’ career is only getting back as his latest film, No Good Deed, which also star Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, stormed the box office at number one last week after taking in an impressive $24.5 million in its opening weekend.
