Last night’s surprise win at the Grammys went to Beck, who won the prestigious Album of the Year gong over Beyonce, and once again, rapper Kanye West stormed the stage in protest. However, unlike the cringeworthy 2009 moment when he ruined Taylor Swift VMAs moment, this was all just one big joke! Or so Kanye pretended it was, anyway…
Kanye famously crashed Taylor Swift’s VMAs speech in 2009 when the Love Story superstar won the Best Female Video Award for You Belong With Me ahead of Beyonce’s Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It). And the rapper was at it AGAIN last night, when he jokingly walked on stage during Beck’s shock acceptance speech, after he won the Album award for Morning Phase, over the likes of Pharrell and Ed Sheeran.
Despite the rocker’s LP obviously being a good ‘un, nobody really expected that he’d win big on the night, with us personally expecting the award to go to Brit Sam Smith. However, the Stay With Me crooner still managed to walk away with four awards, so it’s winners all round, really. Although Kanye pretended like he was kidding during the stage invasion, you could tell that both he and Queen Bey may have been a little bummed by the fact that she didn’t win, with someone making an amazing Vine of her and hubby Jay Z’s reaction.
Kanye’s invasion wasn’t the only time that the No Church In The Wild star took to the stage last night, with him also joining Rihanna and Paul McCartney to sing their new track, FourFiveSeconds, as well as him also performing a stripped down version of Only One, which he dedicated to his adorable daughter, North. This was the first time that Kanye had performed on the Grammys stage in six years and although he gave both performances his all, the rapper admitted last night that he wasn’t overly thrilled with the fact that his latest album Yeezus was snubbed from Album nominations.
He also admitted that Beck should have given his award to Queen Bey, although the singer won it fair and square. Not bitter at all Kanye, are we?
“I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us,” West said, according to Vanity Fair. “We ain’t going to play with them no more. ‘Flawless.’ Beyoncé’s video. And Beck needs to respect artistry, and he should have given his award to Beyoncé.”
He then said of the lack of noms: “At this point, we tired of it. What happens is, when you keep on diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration. We, as musicians, have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album, and they feel like it takes them to another place.
“Then they do this promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want commercial advertising. No. We not playing with them anymore. And by the way, I got my wife, my daughter, and I got my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing that would put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity,” he added. “That’s the reason why I didn’t say anything tonight. But you all knew what it meant when ‘Ye stepped on that stage.”
And West isn’t the only one that poked fun at Beck’s win, with his other half Kim Kardashian also taking to Instagram to post a shocked face selfie alongside showbiz BFFs John Legend and Beyonce, alongside the caption: “This is the Beck won that award face?!?!?!” OUCH.
