It looks like Kanye West isn’t the only rapper that can open his mouth and tell a few home truths, as In Da Club hit maker, 50 Cent has spoken out on the recent Kanye Grammy controversy, saying that Kanye was wrong.
The 39-year-old believes that Beck, who felt the wrath of Kanye during Sunday night’s Grammys, was the artist who deserved to win the Album of the Year Grammy, particularly because of the effort he puts into his music, and thinks that the Only One singer was wrong to state otherwise. He also threw some serious shade at Beyonce.
“Beck produced his record, wrote the record — there’s eleven producers on Beyonce’s album. Kanye being a producer and writer should see that,” the rapper told People when asked whether he felt Kanye was right for saying Beyonce should have won the prestigious Grammy.
So, is 50 — real name Curtis James Jackson III — saying that Beck actually possesses more talent than Queen Bey? We think so… though the rapper is well aware that losing out on a Grammy win, especially when you think you deserve it, is a difficult pill to swallow. “I felt that I deserved the Best new Artist for my first album — it’s the largest debut in rap with 13 million records sold and when’s the last time you ever saw Evanescence? Crickets, crickets. It’s just the way it is,” he said of his Grammy loss in 2004.
Since his outburst, Kanye, 37, has apologised to Beck and claimed his “disrespecting artistry” rant was misconstrued. “When I said that thing about respect artistry, I think it came off the wrong way, and that was a mis-wording on my part because obviously Beck is one of the most respected artists and respects artistry. But I felt — and this is my opinion and he’s his own man and he’s not wrong and we’ll still go play basketball and stuff [unless] he doesn’t want to do it — but I felt that even though the Grammys some times give awards to people who you wouldn’t think should win in the category, as a respect to artists, we mention the other artist’s name in our speech,” the rapper told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show.
“That was the point I was making about it. There’s like many of times I gave other people my award, literally made them come up onstage. Maroon 5, when they won best new artist, [Adam Levine] mentioned me because it was the College Dropout and [it had] 10 nominations and all that,” he added.
West also referred to Beck, who still praised Kanye after his controversial remarks, as one of the “nicest guys” around and also one of the “most respected musicians in the game.” The rapper also hinted that his move was in Beck’s favour, as well as Beyonce’s, because it raised his profile once more. “There’s nothing that I will want to do as a fellow musician to disrespect him in any way. And the weird thing is like, and I don’t feel like I have the right to take away from people’s moments, but the reality of it is — and case in point by who came up to me right afterwards — is it’s almost like a chiropractor,” he said, before adding, “You know, you just get a little crook our like, ‘Wow, this crook has been there!’ It’s just a little jolt of truth, right? And then you know, everyone feels better after the fact, or everyone is way more famous after the fact, or everyone sells way more albums after the fact, and then Kanye just goes on being an a**hole to everyone.”
